Atop Petersberg hill stands Sankt Petri a church with a history as rich as the soil beneath its foundations. This isn’t just any church. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Erfurt’s tumultuous past. Imagine the Benedictine monks who first inhabited this hill. They built St Peter’s Church part of their monastery in the 12th century. The very hill and later the citadel were named after this church. Its existence predates the citadel. The original building didn’t survive. It burned down in 1080 but was rebuilt between 1103 and 1147.

Sankt Petri played a significant role in the creation of the Petersberg Citadel. The hill was always strategically important. In 1665 the Electorate of Mainz built the citadel. It was meant to show power and suppress rebellion. The city and the area had been recently conquered. This grand fortress incorporated the existing church into its structure. Sankt Petri became an integral part of the citadel’s complex. This gave the church a unique military context.

During the Napoleonic era Sankt Petri suffered damage. In 1813 a battle raged around the citadel. The church along with other buildings caught fire. This wasn’t the church’s first brush with destruction. In 1184 a meeting of nobles fell through the floor of the building. Many drowned in the latrine beneath.

The church’s history after this incident remains relatively quiet compared to the fortress’s violent past. Prussian troops later used the remaining church as a storage facility for flour and military supplies. They stripped the church of much of its original character.

Sankt Petri’s story however doesn’t end there. After the German reunification in 1990. The Petersberg Citadel underwent extensive restoration. This involved extensive repairs to the church. Today Sankt Petri stands as a testament to resilience. It survived centuries of conflict. It stands as a visible link between Erfurt’s monastic past and its modern present. The church is once again a significant piece of the city’s heritage. A silent observer of Erfurt’s ever-evolving story.
