The imposing brick facade of Sankt Petri Church greets you. Its sturdy presence speaks of a century’s worth of stories.

Sankt Petri in Flensburg’s Nordstadt district isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to faith and community. Built between 1908 and 1909 it replaced the old Bethlehemskapelle a converted barn. The growth of Flensburg spurred the need for a larger place of worship. The church’s construction marked a significant chapter in the city’s expansion.

Interestingly a black and white photo taken during the church’s construction shows the Flensburg flag for the first time. It depicts the city’s coat of arms on a solid blue background. This detail provides a unique glimpse into the city’s history. A year later C C Christiansen’s residential home was built nearby. The pastorate followed in 1912/13.

The architect Peter Jorgensen from Berlin designed Sankt Petri. Its cross-shaped brick structure features a western tower. Its neo-Gothic vaulted ceiling is a beautiful example of architectural design. The church remains largely unchanged. The prominent tower is a landmark of both the Neu- and Nordstadt districts.

The interior is defined by its gothicizing vault and a surrounding gallery. It’s simple yet spacious. The church seats up to 500 people. Ludwig Dettmann’s 1909 altarpiece depicts “Christ with the sinking Peter” a scene from Matthew 14. Albert Klingner designed the church’s intricate windows.

Sankt Petri boasts a beautiful organ built by Detlef Kleuker in 1967. The organ has 21 stops. Its excellent acoustics make it perfect for concerts. In fact chamber music CDs have been recorded here.

In 2015 the church underwent significant repairs. Cracks in the vault air bubbles under the plaster and rot in the sacristy required extensive work. The cost was 500000 euros. Services were held temporarily in the community center. The walls and benches are now painted in their original light gray.

Today Sankt Petri continues to serve as a vital part of the Flensburg community. It’s a place of worship and a symbol of the city’s growth. It stands as a silent observer of Flensburg’s rich history. Its story is far from over.
