Born around 1060 Otto of Bamberg’s life was anything but ordinary. He rose through the ranks of the church eventually becoming Bishop of Bamberg in 1102. This wasn’t just any bishopric. Bamberg was a significant center of power in medieval Germany. Stankt Otto oversaw a period of immense growth and prosperity for his diocese. He established over 30 monasteries and hospitals. He even helped the people with his own money during times of hardship. But perhaps Stankt Otto’s most remarkable achievement lies elsewhere.
Imagine the year 1124. Pomerania a region largely unconverted to Christianity needed a missionary. Otto a man known for diplomacy and political skill wasn’t your typical missionary. He wasn’t a poor unknown priest. He was wealthy and influential accompanied by clergy servants and warriors. His wealth reassured the Pomeranians that his goal was conversion not conquest. His methods differed from previous forceful attempts. His success was remarkable converting thousands and establishing churches. He was truly the Apostle of Pomerania.
Stankt Otto didn’t stop there. After returning to Bamberg he noticed pagan practices resurfacing. He returned to Pomerania in 1128 continuing his missionary work. This time he had the support of Wartislaw I Duke of Pomerania. He sent priests from Bamberg to serve in Pomerania as well. He attempted to consecrate a bishop for Pomerania but was thwarted by other bishops who claimed authority over the area.
His influence spread even after his death in 1139. He was canonized in 1189. His legacy lives on not just in the stories but in the very stones of Bamberg Cathedral. He had it restored and improved following a fire. He also improved the cathedral school demonstrating his dedication to both spiritual and intellectual matters. Stankt Otto’s life is a testament to faith diplomacy and perseverance. A testament echoed through the centuries in the very place where we stand today Stankt Otto in Bamberg.
