Journey back to the 15th century. Imagine Nuremberg engulfed in the flames of the First Margrave War. Sankt Nikolaus und Sankt Ulrich church, newly built, also fell victim to the destruction. The church you see before you today, though bearing the scars of history, stands as a testament to resilience. Sankt Nikolaus und Sankt Ulrich church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and Saint Ulrich, was initially constructed between 1414 and 1416. The church was ravaged by fire, the nave rebuilt in its current form in 1449. The original wooden beamed ceiling and two-tiered wooden galleries gave way to a stone vault and stone galleries in 1592 and 1599, respectively. Fast forward to 1902, and the church underwent further transformation. An extension was added to the west end to house a magnificent organ. The western gable wall was opened up, and a gallery was inserted for the organ. The current organ, boasting 37 registers, two manuals, and a pedal, was installed in 1998, built by Hermann Eule Orgelbau Bautzen. Inside Sankt Nikolaus und Sankt Ulrich, the Baroque altar commands attention, with its two columns and a broken gable. The altarpiece, dating back to 1702, depicts Christ on the cross, a work by an unknown artist. Look closely, and you’ll discover a small Gothic tabernacle from the late 15th century. Also noteworthy is the pictorial allegory above the confessional from 1602, created by Andreas Herneisen.
