A marvel of reinforced concrete stands before you. This is Sankt Konrad und Elisabeth a church unlike any other.

Built in 1930 it was one of the first churches constructed entirely of exposed concrete. Architect Carl Anton Meckel designed this pioneering structure. A model even resides in the Deutsches Museum in Munich. Its innovative design was a testament to the era’s embrace of modern building techniques.

Tragedy struck during World War II. A devastating air raid in November 1944 severely damaged the church. The building bore the scars of war for years. However Freiburgers rallied. Reconstruction efforts in the 1950s restored the church. Subsequent renovations shaped its current form. The church stands as a symbol of resilience.

Step inside and gaze at the stunning stained glass. Artist Rainer Dorwarth created the magnificent chancel window. It depicts a glorious Christ surrounded by angels and saints. Among them are Bernhard of Baden Peter Canisius and of course Konrad and Elisabeth. Paul Hirt a Villingen artist designed the fourteen side windows. They showcase the mysteries of the rosary in vibrant colors.

The church boasts another unusual feature a labyrinth. This remarkable seven-circuit labyrinth mirrors the one in San Vitale Ravenna. The polished stones mark the center and turning points. They form a cross when viewed from above. A clever touch allows the chancel window’s Christ to be reflected in these dark stones.

The bells too tell a story. Master Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling cast these bronze bells in Heidelberg in 1957. The largest resides in the east tower. The others hang in the west tower. Their harmonious chime echoes the faith of the community.

Sankt Konrad und Elisabeth is more than just a church. It is a historical artifact a testament to faith. It is a beautiful example of innovative architecture. More than that it’s a living symbol of Freiburg’s spirit a place where history faith and art converge.
