In 1143 documents mentioned St Kiliani Gisbodisleybin. This was the first record of the church’s parish. It belonged to the Diocese of Mainz. The church you see before you St Kiliani is not that original church. That one is long gone.

St Kiliani in Gispersleben has a rich history. It’s stood the test of time. The current building however is much younger. A great fire destroyed the village in 1733. This fire also destroyed the earlier St Kiliani church. The church you see today was built in stages after the fire.

The tower was completed in 1744. The nave with its double gallery followed in 1792. A late Baroque pulpit altar was added in 1794. This altar is still a highlight of the church’s interior. It’s a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Notice its intricate detail.

A Hesse organ was installed in 1803. This organ has an original case. The original instrument has been maintained. The organ has recently undergone a major restoration. Its pipes had fallen into disrepair. The restoration lasted from 2020 to 2024. This involved painstaking work to restore the organ to its former glory.

In 1950 Gispersleben became part of Erfurt. This meant that St Kiliani became part of a larger city. A large housing estate was built nearby between 1974 and 1980. About 15000 people now lived near the church. This led to the building of the Martin Niemöller House in 1980. This was a community center built to serve the growing congregation.

The Martin Niemöller House was funded by the Evangelical Churches in West Germany. The church’s expansion is testament to its enduring role in the community.

In 1998 St Kiliani joined with the Gispersleben Viti church. This was a merger of two local churches. This created a larger stronger church community. St Kiliani’s story is one of resilience. It’s a story of rebuilding and renewal. This church stands as a symbol of faith and community. It has survived centuries of change. It continues to serve the people of Gispersleben. Its history is woven into the fabric of this town. The stories of its people are preserved in its walls.
