High up on the hills stands Sankt Jürgen. Its red brick neogothic silhouette dominates Flensburg’s east bank. Today we explore this prominent church.

Sankt Jürgen is relatively young. Construction finished around 1904. But the area has a much longer history. In the Middle Ages a hospital stood here. It cared for plague and leprosy patients.

The hospital was named after Saint George. In Low German, Saint George is Jürgen. Today the district is affectionately called Jürgensby. Sankt Jürgen gives this district its name.

Inside Sankt Jürgen, prepare to be overwhelmed. A late Gothic reticulated vault stretches overhead. The altar is ornate and impressive. Its design reflects the late Gothic style.

The church’s location adds to its charm. Sankt Jürgen sits in the northern part of the Captain’s Quarter. This location offers a unique perspective. It overlooks the Flensburg Fjord.

The district of Sankt Jürgen was once independent. In the Middle Ages the leprosarium was first called Sankt Jürgen. The surrounding area was owned by the hospital. The city had little influence here.

After the Reformation the area belonged to the Holy Spirit Monastery. Around 1590 the settlement of Sankt Jürgen formed. It grew outside Flensburg’s city walls. This was in front of the Johannistor.

This fishing settlement grew into a densely built suburb. But it was part of Adelby. In the early 19th century Sankt Jürgen had 1271 inhabitants.

By the mid-19th century Sankt Jürgen consisted of Süder- and Norder St. Jürgen. Süder-St. Jürgen covered four hectares. It was north of the Dammhof area. It stretched from Plankemai to Margarethenhof. Norder-St. Jürgen began near Hafenspitze. It followed the Fördehang north to Lautrupsbach. Norder-St. Jürgen covered 32 hectares.

On March 3 1874 Norder- and Süder-St. Jürgen merged with Flensburg. Jürgensgaard to the east merged in 1900. Sankt Jürgen Church was built between 1903 and 1907.

The area north of Lautrupsbach is now part of Fruerlund. The rest of Norder-St. Jürgen is the district of Sankt Jürgen. The district consists mainly of the Captain’s Quarter. It includes Sankt Jürgen Church. The Offener Kanal Flensburg is also here.

At the lower end of the Captain’s Quarter is the divisional command building. This building dates back to the imperial era. It was the only military building in this part of the city. Flensburg was a military city for a time.

Sankt Jürgen is more than just a church. It is a landmark visible from afar. Its history connects to the city’s past. It has been a hospital settlement and a district. Now it is a vital part of Flensburg.

As you leave Sankt Jürgen consider its impact. Its silhouette is a reminder of Flensburg’s rich heritage. The church connects the past and the present. It is a symbol of faith and community. Sankt Jürgen stands as a testament to Flensburg’s enduring spirit.
