A rose. That’s what first struck me about Sankt Johannes kyrka. Not just any rose but countless roses carved in stone and wood adorning this beautiful building. This isn’t just any church it’s Sankt Johannes kyrka in Malmö a stunning example of Art Nouveau architecture.

Built between 1903 and 1907 it stands as a testament to the architectural vision of Axel Anderberg. He dared to break tradition. Instead of placing the tower on the traditional west side Anderberg positioned it majestically on the north side next to the sanctuary. A bold move for its time. The church wasn’t finished until 1907 a delay that forced the parish to hold its first services elsewhere. The year 1906 is nevertheless engraved in the sandstone above the main entrance.

The red brick exterior sits on a granite base. Its roof is covered in enamel tiling. Inside you’ll find approximately 20 different types of natural stone used for its beautiful ornaments. The church is known as “Rosornas kyrka” – the Church of Roses – for its many rose motifs. Roses are more than mere decoration. They hold deep symbolic meaning in Christianity.

Look closely at the pulpit. Sculptor Carl Andersson crafted five detailed panels. They tell the story of Jesus’s life from the stable in Bethlehem to his resurrection. The altar piece a relief carved in oak depicts Jesus with children. It’s a serene and moving scene. Above the high altar you’ll find depictions of three reformers Martin Luther Olaus Petri and Claus Mortensen. These figures played key roles in the Reformation.

Sankt Johannes kyrka isn’t simply a place of worship. It’s a piece of Malmö’s history. It’s a work of art. It’s a testament to faith beauty and the courage to challenge convention. Take a moment to appreciate the roses. They’re a reminder of the enduring power of faith and art.
