Erfurt was first mentioned in 742 in a letter. St. Boniface wrote to Pope Zacharias in this letter. He asked the Pope to ratify the bishopric of Erfurt.

Saint Boniface informed Pope Zachary that he had established three dioceses in central Germany. One of them was “in a place called Erphesfurt, which for a long time has been inhabited by pagan natives.”
Boniface’s mission wasn’t just about spreading faith. It was about reshaping the cultural landscape. Karl Martell saw Christianity as a way to unify his empire. Bonifatius secured a letter of protection in 723. Willibald of Mainz tells of the symbolic felling of a sacred oak near Geismar. This oak was dedicated to the god Donar.
