Gazing upon Sankt Antonius von Padua, can you sense its resilience? This unassuming red brick church, nestled between Holsteiner and Missundestraße in Dortmund, has witnessed a century of change. Sankt Antonius von Padua was completed in 1908. It was designed in the neo-Gothic style by Ludwig Becker, the architect of Mainz Cathedral. Its construction fulfilled a growing need for Catholic churches in Dortmund’s northern inner city, driven by an influx of Catholic workers. More than just a place of worship, Sankt Antonius von Padua served a vital social function in this working-class neighborhood. Its presence offered support and solace amidst the challenging conditions of the early 20th century. Remarkably, the church emerged from World War II relatively unscathed. Its magnificent stained-glass windows, particularly the large one in the choir, survived the bombings. The interior, with its neo-Gothic altar and figures from the Wiedenbrück School, remains a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry of the time. The high altar, a collaborative work completed in 1908, features intricate carvings and is one of the few remaining neo-Gothic altars in Dortmund. Look closely at the wooden reliefs flanking the tabernacle. They depict scenes from both the Old and New Testaments. The reliefs to the left show the Sacrifice of Melchizedek and Moses and the Manna miracle. To the right, you’ll find depictions of the Last Supper and the Emmaus disciples. Sankt Antonius von Padua stands as a symbol of endurance and community. It serves as a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of social support. The church continues to serve its community today, a beacon of hope and a testament to its rich history.
