The story begins with the Gneisenau coal mine. Coal was first mined here in 1886. The mine became the heart of working life. People seeking work settled around it including many Catholics. Kaplan Ising became the first clergyman. He played a crucial role in the community’s spiritual development. A Catholic church was built between 1896 and 1898. It was dedicated to Saint Aloysius.
