From Sankey’s Lookout the panoramic view is breathtaking. Sankey’s Lookout offers stunning views across Brisbane. This isn’t just any viewpoint. It’s steeped in history.

Sankey’s Lookout sits atop Whites Hill. Whites Hill has a rich past. It was once home to Indigenous Australians. Later Robert White a fascinating character bought the land. He built a house with a tearoom and telescope. He even had a camera obscura a device that projected images.

White’s Hill was a popular spot. People came for dances and weddings. They paid sixpence to enter. The views were spectacular. The house became a popular tourist destination. It offered stunning views of the city.

Robert White’s enterprise wasn’t without its problems. He faced legal issues over selling alcohol illegally. He also battled with local authorities about road access. Despite these challenges his hilltop haven thrived.

Eventually Brisbane City Council acquired the land. That included the land of Major JR Sankey. Sankey owned a large area near Pine Mountain. The land was originally used for grazing. Later it became a rubbish tip. Eventually it was transformed into sporting fields and picnic areas.

The original house was unfortunately demolished. It suffered from vandalism. Today Sankey’s Lookout stands as a testament to the area’s history. You can almost feel the echoes of those early visitors. The panoramic views are still magnificent. They offer a breathtaking glimpse of Brisbane’s past and present. The legacy of Robert White and JR Sankey continues at Sankey’s Lookout. From this vantage point you can appreciate the beauty and history of this special place. Enjoy the view.
