The gentle lapping of water against the shore. That’s the sound of Sanjay Lake. This isn’t just any lake. It’s a hidden gem in East Delhi a testament to human ingenuity and nature’s resilience. Developed by the Delhi Development Authority in the 1970s Sanjay Lake opened its waters to the public in 1982.
Initially it spanned 89 acres a vast expanse of water reflecting the sky. The surrounding park added another 89 acres to its grandeur a total of 178 acres of green space. But urbanization had other plans. As housing colonies sprung up around it the lake shrunk. The construction of National Highway 24 further reduced its size. Unauthorised construction and sewage added to its woes. Today Sanjay Lake is significantly smaller but retains its charm.
Now a tranquil oasis in a bustling city Sanjay Lake covers 17 hectares about 42 acres. It’s still surrounded by a larger 69-hectare park. The water now supplemented by rainwater and sometimes the Yamuna River. This artificial lake still attracts a surprising array of birdlife. Local birdwatchers claim over 90 species visit including migratory birds that spend their winters at the lake’s deeper eastern edges. Shovellers pintails pochards and teals are just a few examples of the feathered residents. These birds are the true residents. These creatures are a testament to the lake’s enduring ecological significance.
The lake isn’t merely a pretty sight. It’s a popular spot for joggers and walkers who use its well-laid-out fitness track. An adventure park has also been built within its grounds offering thrills like a jungle house a soft play area and an archery range. And if you look carefully you might spot evidence of another human touch. The Delhi Development Authority once planned a grand “Lake City Project” with corporate towers and studio apartments near the lake. That project never materialized. But the lake itself remains a vibrant part of East Delhi’s identity. A place of peace of beauty and of surprising wildlife. A true Delhi treasure.
