Sanctuary Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit has a rich but relatively short history. It wasn’t always the place of worship you see today. It started as a storefront church. It changed owners and denominations several times before becoming vacant in July 2014. The current congregation saw potential. They purchased the building after months of planning and negotiations. It needed significant work.

The transformation was remarkable. They replaced 70% of the flooring fixed the ceiling updated the heating system and renovated the bathroom. Volunteers played a huge role. The grand opening was December 12 2014. A short time later they added a small record store. An outdoor patio was also added in 2015. A community art project decorated the walls.
