“Tuberculosis treatment by the sea.” That’s what they offered here at Sanatório Marítimo do Norte. This building stands in Valadares near Vila Nova de Gaia. It’s a monument to innovative healthcare. It opened in August 1917. Joaquim Gomes Ferreira Alves founded it. Architect Francisco de Oliveira Ferreira designed it.

The Sanatório Marítimo do Norte was special for its time. It used the sea and sun to heal. This was known as thalassotherapy using seawater. It also used helioterapy using sunlight. They believed these natural elements could combat diseases like tuberculosis.

Imagine patients arriving here seeking relief. They hoped the sea air and sunshine would restore their health. The Sanatório Marítimo do Norte became a haven. It was a place where nature met medicine.

In 1978 a new chapter began. Álvaro Ferreira Alves the founder’s son donated the Sanatório Marítimo do Norte to the state. There were conditions. Staff had to be integrated into public service. The space should be used for healthcare facilities. But things didn’t go as planned.

The Sanatório Marítimo do Norte stopped functioning. Later it was given to the Associação S. João de Deus. The plan was to create a support center for retired nurses. This never happened either. Instead the president of the nurses’ union lived here with his family. This led to legal battles. Eventually the agreement was terminated.

Without a purpose the building decayed. The government decided to step in. They planned to establish the Centro de Reabilitação Física do Norte here. The first stone of this new project was laid on June 26 2010.

Today the Sanatório Marítimo do Norte awaits classification. It stands as a reminder of its past. It represents hope and healing. Its story reflects changes in healthcare. It shows the dedication to fighting disease. The Sanatório Marítimo do Norte is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of perseverance.
