Imagine standing before an engineering marvel. San Vicente Dam stands tall. It holds back the waters of San Vicente Reservoir near Lakeside. This is more than just a dam. It is a testament to San Diego’s ingenuity and resilience.
San Vicente Dam was born of necessity. In the late 19th century, San Diego struggled with water scarcity. The city needed reliable water storage and flood control. So, the city built dams along the San Diego River Basin.
In 1941, construction began on San Vicente Dam. The original dam rose 220 feet. It created a reservoir holding 90,000 acre-feet of water. This initial construction cost a mere 2.7 million USD.
But San Diego continued to grow. It needed more water. The San Diego County Water Authority formed in 1944. They began work on the First San Diego Aqueduct. This aqueduct would bring water from the Colorado River. San Vicente Reservoir became a crucial part of this water supply system.
The original designers of San Vicente Dam were forward thinking. They knew that the dam might need to be raised in the future. They positioned the dam in such a way that its height could be increased by as much as 120 feet. They also ensured its grout curtain was extended for a larger foundation.
In 2009, a massive project began. The San Vicente Dam Raise aimed to more than double the reservoir’s capacity. Workers raised the dam’s height by 117 feet to a total of 337 feet. This increased the reservoir’s capacity by 152,000 acre-feet. This brought the total to 242,000 acre-feet.
The dam raise employed an innovative technique. It used roller-compacted concrete. RCC uses less cement and water. This creates a cookie dough-like texture. It is as strong as conventional concrete. Workers placed RCC in layers and compacted it. The process resembled road construction.
The San Vicente Dam Raise was the tallest of its kind in the world. In 2014, the project was completed. The dam raise cost an estimated 568 million USD. It also included a new pumping facility. The San Vicente Pipeline would connect the reservoir to the Second San Diego Aqueduct.
The International Commission on Large Dams recognized this feat. They presented the San Diego County Water Authority with the International Milestone RCC Project Award. The dam can withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
San Vicente Reservoir reopened for recreation. Visitors can enjoy fishing and boating. Water-skiing and wakeboarding are also popular. The reservoir is open according to a winter and summer schedule. It is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
