Overlooking the landscape, the San Simon Monastery stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. The San Simon Monastery, also known as the Greek Orthodox monastery of San Simon, is more than just a peaceful retreat. It holds a significant place in both religious tradition and modern history. Some believe it rests on the site of the home of St. Simeon. This is the priest who performed the redemption ceremony for Jesus, as described in the Gospel of Luke. He prophesied Jesus’ future greatness.

The San Simon Monastery played a pivotal role in the 1948 War. It was the site of a fierce battle that shaped the fate of Jerusalem. During the war, four Jewish communities in south Jerusalem were essentially under siege. These were Ramat Rachel kibbutz, Mekor Haim, Talpiot, and Arnona. The Arab forces controlled the surrounding Katamon neighborhood, effectively isolating these Jewish communities. Capturing Katamon was crucial for Jewish control of West Jerusalem.

The Battle of San Simon, fought in April 1948, was a brutal struggle. Ninety percent of the Israeli forces were wounded, some fatally. The Israelis were on the verge of retreating. However, the Arab forces withdrew first. This stroke of luck, combined with the Israelis’ resilience, led to a Jewish victory. The siege on the southern Jewish neighborhoods was finally lifted. The San Simon Monastery was a hard-fought turning point in the war.

The San Simon Monastery bears witness to even earlier history. It’s connected to St. Simeon, the son of Cleophas (also known as Alpheus). Cleophas was St. Joseph’s brother and Mary Cleophas was the Blessed Virgin Mary’s sister. This made Simeon a cousin of Jesus. He was chosen to lead the Church of Jerusalem after the death of his brother, St. James, in 62 AD. In the year 66, the Christians of Jerusalem, led by St. Simeon, fled to Pella. This was in response to a divine warning about the city’s impending destruction. They returned after the city fell. St. Simeon led the community for approximately 43 years. He was ultimately martyred under Trajan around the year 107. He was crucified for being a descendant of David and a Christian.

So, the San Simon Monastery isn’t just a place of peace and prayer. It is a place that echoes with the stories of battles fought and lives lived. It’s a reminder of faith and resilience that has shaped the story of Jerusalem. Take a moment to absorb the weight of history and the echoes of both triumph and tragedy within these walls. The San Simon Monastery is a powerful testament to Jerusalem’s enduring spirit.
