What if the very stones beneath your feet could whisper tales of faith and resilience? Right here in Mambaling Cebu City stands the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Roque. It is more than just a church. It’s a living testament to the devotion of a community.

Before 1973 this place was filled with stories easily dismissed as mere legends. Imagine a fisherman seeking food for his family. He heard a mysterious voice urging him to carve something from driftwood. Hesitant at first, he eventually crafted a statuette. The parish priest of San Nicolas identified it as San Roque. Mambaling was then part of San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish.

Another tale speaks of a devastating disease that struck Mambaling. The residents carried the image of San Roque in a procession. Miraculously the disease ceased. These events solidified the people’s faith.

The San Roque Parish was officially established on June 3 1973. Its importance grew over the years. On August 21 2008 Cardinal Ricardo Vidal elevated it to an Archdiocesan Shrine. It became the only shrine in the Philippines dedicated to San Roque.

San Roque is the patron saint against plagues and epidemics. People often seek his protection against contagious diseases. He is also known as the protector of dogs invalids pilgrims bachelors and the falsely accused. Every August 16 the feast of San Roque fills Mambaling with vibrant celebrations.

The church itself has a distinct look. The facade features four red pilasters that frame the entrance. Above the entrance a stained glass window depicts San Roque. A belfry rises on the gospel flank. A staircase spirals around it.

Father Victor Carmelo Diola the current administrator is working hard. He wants to encourage more people to attend mass. The “Balik Simba” program aims to bring people back to worship. The shrine plans to become a major pilgrimage site. A Facebook page called “Friends of San Roque Shrine Cebu” will connect devotees from all over. The shrine also stages “Drama sa Kinabuhi ni San Roque”. It is a play about the life of the saint.

San Roque Parish continues to evolve. It remains a beacon of hope and faith for the community.
