San Pedro Park is more than just grass and trees. It’s a testament to the rich history of the area. San Pedro itself was named for St Peter of Alexandria. Juan Rodrìguez Cabrillo first encountered San Pedro Bay on his feast day in 1542.
Originally a separate city, San Pedro consolidated with Los Angeles in 1909. The neighborhood transformed from a fishing hub into a diverse community. San Pedro Park offers a space for everyone.
Imagine this park in the early days. The Tongva people used plank canoes to navigate these waters. European settlers arrived in 1769. They began to shape the land. Juan José Domínguez received Rancho San Pedro in 1784. It was the first land grant in Alta California.
Later, under United States control, the harbor expanded. Phineas Banning and John Gately Downey led these improvements. Banning even created the Los Angeles & San Pedro Railroad. It was Southern California’s first railroad.
San Pedro also played a role in national defense. Fort MacArthur was established in 1914. It served as a coastal defense site. In 1919, many US Navy ships moved here due to tensions with Japan. San Pedro Bay became a major naval base.
The battleships eventually sailed to Hawaii. This was before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The fleet never returned. San Pedro remained vital for naval training and supply. Today, the USS Iowa is a museum ship here. It recognizes the battleship’s contributions.
Even today, San Pedro has a strong connection to the sea. The Port of Los Angeles is one of the busiest ports in the world. Nearby, the Vincent Thomas Bridge connects San Pedro to Terminal Island.
San Pedro’s cultural diversity is reflected in its neighborhoods. European immigrants settled here. They brought Croatian, Portuguese, Mexican, Italian, Irish and Greek traditions. “Croatian Place” on 9th Street honors the city’s Croatian community.
