San Pa Pao isn’t known for its ancient Lanna temples. Instead its heart beats to the rhythm of Wat Pa Pao. Built in 1883 this Shan Burmese style temple stands apart from its Lanna neighbours. It’s a poignant reminder of the influx of Shan Burmese workers during Chiang Mai’s teak logging boom. These skilled laborers seeking their fortune built Wat Pa Pao as their own place of worship.
Imagine a courtyard enclosed by a low brick wall. A large bell-shaped chedi dominates the space. Adorning this chedi are small sculptures of mythical creatures. Four imposing Qilin guard its corners each resembling a lion with a dragon’s head. These creatures symbolize good luck and prosperity. The chedi itself rests on tiered platforms culminating in a golden spire and a multi-tiered hti a Burmese-style ceremonial umbrella.
The viharn the assembly hall is a more recent structure built of brick and adorned with intricate stucco work. Inside three large Buddha images are enshrined. Unfortunately it’s usually closed to the public a guarded secret.
Every year in early April Wat Pa Pao comes alive. The Poi Sang Long festival transforms the area. Shan youths embark on their journey to become novice monks. This vibrant procession dressed in their finest traditional clothes fills the town with color and energy.
