Have you ever noticed a grand portico with six imposing columns? Right here, in front of you stands the Church of San Nicola da Tolentino, also known as the Tolentini. It’s more than just a church; it’s a testament to Venetian history, art, and architecture. The Theatines, a Catholic order, arrived in Venice in 1527, and they began construction of the church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, in 1590. Vincenzo Scamozzi, a renowned architect, started the project, but it was a tumultuous journey. It was only in 1714 that the building was finally completed, thanks to the efforts of another gifted architect, Andrea Tirali, who added the magnificent portico. The Tolentini is truly special. It’s the only church in Venice with such a grand, freestanding portico, a testament to the genius of its creators. You can see the influence of the Renaissance in the church’s design, but you can also see the Baroque style in the details of the facade. The church has a captivating past. It was bombed in 1849, and the cannonball that destroyed its dome is now displayed on the facade, a silent witness to the church’s resilience. The church is also a graveyard, as Francesco Morosini, the Doge of Venice, is buried there. The interior of the Tolentini is adorned with works of art, such as paintings by Jacopo Palma il Giovane and Padovanino, who were famous Venetian artists. You can almost feel the presence of these great artists as you admire their work. The church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a monument to Venice’s enduring spirit and its artistic heritage. A true gem among the many treasures of Venice.
