Perhaps unexpectedly, San Luca Evangelista stands as a testament to modern Milanese church design. This church is not ancient. Its story began in the late 1950s, a period of rapid expansion for Milan. The growing population around Via Vallazze needed a new parish. Thus, San Luca Evangelista was born in 1957.

Gio Ponti, a renowned architect, designed San Luca Evangelista in 1958. Construction finished in 1960. Ponti also designed the church’s furnishings. The exterior of San Luca Evangelista is striking. Gray ceramic tiles cover the walls. These tiles have a diamond shape creating unique light effects. The facade features a statue of the Redeemer and iron crosses. Jerusalem crosses add further decoration with smooth tiles.

The main entrance is a wooden door framed by clear glass. Side entrances are glass structures that add movement to the facade. The raised sanctuary is framed by an overhanging structure. This creates a welcoming effect. The roof extends over the small churchyard enhancing the design.

Inside San Luca Evangelista, a single nave welcomes visitors. Smaller corridors run along the sides. Concrete pillars support the gabled roof. These pillars widen towards the beams creating a unique structural design. Light streams in through stained-glass windows. A vertical slit on the facade also provides light. This design creates a feeling of lightness. It is similar to Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp chapel.

Originally, the interior had colored horizontal stripes. White and ocher alternated on the side walls. The back wall featured white and blue stripes. The altar area is defined by Carrara marble. The altar, ambo, and tabernacle create a serene space.

Father Costantino Ruggeri oversaw a restoration. This followed changes after the Second Vatican Council. Original furnishings by Ponti remain. These include the confessionals and pews. Carlo Paganini created the bronze statue of the Redeemer. Alfeo Bedeschi sculpted the bronze statue of San Luca. It stands near the first column on the left of the presbytery.

Gio Ponti significantly influenced Italian architecture. He founded Domus magazine. He organized the Milan Triennials. Ponti’s notable works include the Pirelli Tower. He also designed Villa Planchart in Caracas. His Superleggera chair is famous. San Luca Evangelista embodies Ponti’s design principles. The church is simple yet elegant. The design creates a welcoming space. The use of light enhances the spiritual atmosphere. The building reflects a community. It highlights their faith with constructive simplicity. The refined use of color makes the church a special place.
