San Juan de los Lagos isn’t just a church. It’s a pilgrimage site of immense historical and cultural significance. Its story begins in 1542 when Father Miguel de Bologna brought a statue of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. This statue the heart of the basilica is believed to work miracles. The town’s name even changed to honor this sacred image. Originally San Juan Mezquititlan Baptist it became San Juan de los Lagos in 1623 after a miraculous healing.

In 1972 the church gained basilica status. The statue itself a small 20-inch wonder is crafted with an indigenous technique called titzingueni. Tarascan Indians used corn pith orchid juice gesso and paint to create it. This method is still used to make similar statues throughout Mexico. Originally quite simple it was later adorned with clothing and a golden crown.
