“Did someone say ‘cursed island’?”. You might be surprised to hear that about Floreana Island, just a stone’s throw from San Jose. San Jose is a historic wreck, a reminder of the turbulent past of these islands. And Floreana? Well, that island has a history that’s as captivating as it is tragic. It all started in the late 1920s, when a series of individuals drawn to Floreana’s isolation established a small community. There was Dr. Friedrich Ritter, seeking a life free from societal constraints, and the Wittmer family from Cologne, longing for a simpler existence. But paradise became a tangled web of intrigue with the arrival of a self-proclaimed baroness and her lovers. Jealousy and disappearances followed. The baroness vanished with one lover, their fate unknown. Another lover perished under mysterious circumstances, his body later found mummified on a distant island. Dr. Ritter succumbed to suspected food poisoning. Of the seven settlers, four met untimely and unexplained ends. This series of unfortunate events earned Floreana the grim nickname, “cursed island”. Today, San Jose serves as a somber reminder. It’s a shipwreck that speaks of maritime mishaps. While we may never know the full truth of Floreana’s tragic tales, the stories continue to intrigue visitors, painting a vivid picture of the Galapagos’ captivating, and sometimes unsettling, history.
