“Did you know San José El Viejo was almost never built?” I ask. The weathered stones of San José El Viejo whisper stories of Antigua’s past. This isn’t just any church. This is a survivor. A testament to faith perseverance and the unpredictable nature of earthquakes.

San José El Viejo holds a special place in Antigua’s history. Its construction began around 1742. The goal was to house a magnificent Saint Joseph statue sculpted by Alonso de la Paz. A renowned artist of his time. But the builders made a mistake. They started construction without royal permission. The Crown ordered the demolition.

The Saint Joseph statue was moved. The fate of San José El Viejo hung in the balance. Then disaster struck. In 1751 a devastating earthquake damaged the partially built church. The project seemed doomed. Yet the community persevered. They sought permission and in 1759 resumed construction. San José El Viejo was finally completed in 1761. The statue was returned. It was consecrated in February 1762.

The church’s low walls and heavy buttresses tell a story. The community had learned to build with earthquakes in mind. The details are unusual. Not exactly what you’d call orthodox Baroque architecture. Still its single nave is remarkably well-lit. It has more architectural merit than its facade.

Sadly San José El Viejo wasn’t spared forever. The 1773 earthquake inflicted irreparable damage. This magnificent structure was reduced to ruins. It became a barn. It was used to store farm products next to the adjacent farm. This building later became a school.

Even in ruin San José El Viejo is remarkable. It’s better preserved than most of Antigua’s churches that suffered through centuries of earthquakes. In 1944 it was finally recognized as a National Monument. Today it stands as a reminder of Antigua’s resilient spirit. A place where history and romance intertwine. A beautiful wedding venue. A place to reflect on the stories that have shaped Antigua. And a place where the echoes of past prayers still linger in the air.
