Isidro. A name whispered with reverence in Madrid. This humble farmer, born right here in Madrid in 1082, became the city’s patron saint. San Isidro. Let’s explore the quarter that bears his name and uncover the legends that surround him. San Isidro isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a story etched into the heart of Madrid.

San Isidro, the farmer, is celebrated every May 15th. The festivities honor him as the patron saint of Madrid, but also as the patron saint of farmers and laborers. His life was marked by miracles, and his story resonates with the people of Madrid.

One of the most famous miracles concerns his son, Illán. The story goes that young Illán fell into a well. San Isidro, through fervent prayer, caused the well’s water to rise miraculously. This saved his son’s life. This “Pozo del Milagro,” or Well of the Miracle, is a testament to San Isidro’s enduring legacy.

Another miracle attributed to San Isidro occurred while he was plowing a field. He struck the ground, and a spring of water gushed forth. This spring, located near the Hermitage of San Isidro, is said to possess healing properties. In 1528, Empress Isabel ordered a hermitage built on this spot after Prince Felipe recovered his health by drinking the water.

The Hermitage of San Isidro became a place of pilgrimage. People would come to drink the water and honor the saint. Even today, people continue the tradition. They visit the spring, fill their bottles, and hope for a taste of the miraculous. The Hermitage, nestled in the Pradera de San Isidro, is a focal point of the annual San Isidro festivities. Thousands gather to celebrate with music, dancing, and traditional foods. Rosquillas, ring-shaped pastries, are a particular favorite. They come in two varieties: “listas” (smart, bathed in sugar) and “tontas” (stupid, plain).

Beyond the hermitage, the San Isidro Museum offers another glimpse into the saint’s life. Located in what is believed to be the house where San Isidro lived and died, the museum tells the story of this humble farmer who became a symbol of Madrid. The museum, located in the Plaza de San Andrés, also offers access to the Pozo del Milagro, allowing visitors to connect with the legend in a tangible way. So, as you explore the San Isidro quarter, remember the man, the miracles, and the enduring spirit that shaped this part of Madrid.
