Established in 1936 San Dieguito High School Academy initially held classes in tents. The San Dieguito Union High School District hadn’t yet built its first school. San Dieguito Academy as it’s now known wasn’t always an academy. It started as San Dieguito Union High School. Then it transformed into San Dieguito High School. Finally it became San Dieguito High School Academy. This change reflected a shift in philosophy. The school aimed to create a more student-centered environment. This meant limiting enrollment to a maximum of 1450 students.
San Dieguito Academy is a school of choice. Students from across the district can apply. However a lottery system determines admission. The lottery ensures fair access. Many students apply each year. Demand often exceeds available spots. In 2022 a lottery was reimplemented. This was the first time since 2015. The reason was simple. More than 491 students listed San Dieguito Academy as their top choice. Only 428 spots were available. The increased capacity accommodated 137 more students than the previous year.
San Dieguito Academy has a unique 4×4 class schedule. This contrasts with the more traditional rotating block schedule. Students take four 90-minute classes daily. They complete eight classes or 80 credits each year. This system provides flexibility. Students can complete a full year of course work in one semester. It also allows students greater control over their academic pathways.
The academy’s history is rich with milestones. In 2015 a new Math and Science building opened. It replaced the old Senior Court. The building’s construction was made possible by a voter-approved bond measure. This demonstrates the community’s investment in the academy. The school also successfully navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It implemented a distance learning plan. Eventually students returned to campus in a hybrid setting. They transitioned back to full-time in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year.
San Dieguito Academy boasts a diverse range of extracurricular activities. These activities reflect the students’ wide range of interests. Academics media languages career interests community service and athletics are all represented. The many clubs and events on campus offer opportunities. They enhance the academic experience. The school’s commitment to both academics and student well-being is evident. San Dieguito Academy stands as a testament to its rich history. It’s also a testament to its commitment to providing a quality education. It remains a place where students grow academically. It is also where they thrive personally.
