Established on March 13 1897 San Diego State University began as the San Diego Normal School. Its initial purpose was to train local women as elementary school teachers. The school opened with just seven faculty members and 91 students. Their curriculum was limited to English history and mathematics. This humble beginning is a far cry from the sprawling campus we see today.
