Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Balboa Park lies the San Diego Museum of Art. Do you know what whispered secrets it holds? The San Diego Museum of Art first opened its doors in 1926 as the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego. It was the dream of many, sparked by the Panama-California International Exposition of 1915-1916. The exposition’s art exhibits were so popular that civic leaders and artists knew San Diego needed a permanent art haven. Appleton S. Bridges, a prominent businessman, stepped forward to fund the construction. The museum’s design, a Spanish Plateresque style, echoes the exposition’s architecture. The architects, William Templeton Johnson and Robert W. Snyder, drew inspiration from Spanish Renaissance masterpieces like the Cathedral of Valladolid and the University of Salamanca. Sculptor Chris Mueller, who had worked on the exposition, adorned the facade with sculptures of Spanish masters like Velázquez, Murillo, and Zurbarán. The San Diego Museum of Art’s collection began with donations from Bridges himself, along with others like Archer M. Huntington and the Timken family. The museum even survived a stint as a naval hospital during World War II, its art safely stored away. It later expanded with wings added in 1966 and 1974, housing an ever-growing collection. The San Diego Museum of Art boasts an impressive Spanish art collection, including works by Murillo, Zurbarán, and El Greco. One of its prized possessions is Goya’s “El Marqués de Sofraga,” acquired in 1939 and never before exhibited publicly. Another highlight is the Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of Indian paintings, a vast collection of over 1,400 works. The San Diego Museum of Art isn’t just a building.
