Gazing at San Diego High School, can you imagine it once resembled a castle? San Diego High School has a rich and fascinating history. Established in 1882 as Russ School, it’s the oldest high school in the San Diego Unified School District. It also holds the title of the oldest public school in California still on its original site. The original Russ School building, a two-story, eight-room Italianate villa, was built with lumber donated by Joseph Russ. In 1888, a high school program was added. The first graduating class, a mere four students, celebrated in 1889. By 1902, the school outgrew its original building. A new structure, designed by F.S. Allen, opened in 1907. This grand Gothic Revival building, nicknamed “The Grey Castle” by students, became a landmark. However, due to earthquake safety regulations, the Grey Castle met its demise in the 1970s. The current buildings, dedicated in 1976, stand as a testament to the school’s enduring presence. San Diego High School also boasts an impressive athletic legacy. Its football stadium, Balboa Stadium, hosted presidents and music legends. Built in 1914, it once held the title of the largest municipal stadium in the nation. The school also holds national championship titles in football and baseball. San Diego High School even claims the first use of female cheerleaders in 1922. From its humble beginnings as Russ School to the modern campus of today, San Diego High School continues to shape young minds. Its history, woven with triumphs and transformations, stands as a proud landmark in the San Diego landscape.
