Did you know that San Diego Bay boasts one of the best natural harbors on the entire West Coast? Imagine Spanish ships first entering this very bay in 1542. Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo charted these waters. This stunning natural harbor played a pivotal role in shaping California’s history.

San Diego Bay isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a bustling deepwater port. The Port of San Diego manages this vital waterway. It also administers the public lands that surround the bay. It’s a special government entity established in 1962. Its revenue comes from tariffs and rents from businesses operating there. The Port has two container ship facilities. One of them specializes in refrigerated containers. There’s also a cruise ship terminal. At its peak in 2008 it hosted over 250 ship calls annually. That’s over 800000 passengers. Today the number of ship calls has unfortunately decreased. This is due to major cruise lines withdrawing their regular services.

General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company NASSCO is near the bay. It is the only shipyard on the West Coast that can build and repair massive ocean-going vessels. The San Diego-Coronado Bridge spans the bay. It’s a magnificent structure built in 1969. The bridge has a 200-foot clearance. This lets Navy ships pass underneath. However even this height isn’t enough for Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. They are therefore docked further north. Originally a toll bridge tolls were discontinued in 2002. This happened after construction loans were fully repaid.

America’s Cup Harbor a small cove south of Shelter Island is another important spot. It was once the Commercial Basin. It housed San Diego’s fishing fleet. This area was renamed in 1994 in honor of the 1995 America’s Cup races. The bay is a hub of recreational activities. Numerous resorts hotels and the San Diego Convention Center line the waterfront. There are also numerous parks and nature preserves. Sightseeing boats depart from downtown. Commercial sport fishing and whale watching tours leave from Shelter Island.

Ten museum ships call San Diego Bay home. Among them is the USS Midway an aircraft carrier museum. Another is the Star of India. It’s the oldest iron-hulled merchant ship still afloat. It’s also the world’s oldest active sailing ship. These magnificent vessels along with others are part of the San Diego Maritime Museum’s floating collection. They are open to the public for a fee. Many are still seaworthy.

In the north lies Harbor Island and Shelter Island. These areas were built on former sandbars. Now they are filled with hotels restaurants marinas and parks. Across from Harbor Island is Spanish Landing. This bayside park commemorates the 1769 meeting of Spanish expeditions. This meeting initiated the European settlement of California. Spanish Landing is also home to San Salvador Village. Here the San Diego Maritime Museum is building a replica of the San Salvador. This is the ship in which Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered San Diego Bay in 1542.

Small boat sailing is hugely popular. Dozens of marinas and nine yacht clubs line the bay. The San Diego Yacht Club hosted the America’s Cup from 1988 to 1995. This bay is truly a remarkable place. Its history and beauty are unparalleled. It’s a vibrant hub of activity a testament to San Diego’s maritime heritage. Enjoy your time exploring its treasures.
