Picture this a simple unassuming building nestled among trees. This is the San Antonio Quaker Meetinghouse a place of quiet contemplation and community. It wasn’t always here. The journey to its current location on the corner of Vandiver and Eisenhauer is a testament to perseverance and faith.

After World War II the American Friends Service Committee held workshops in San Antonio. A few interested people formed a study group. Finding suitable meeting spaces proved challenging. Loyalty oaths and bans on racially mixed groups limited their options. Meetings were held in various locations the YMCA the YWCA even in an attorney’s waiting room. One day a young man in uniform donated $5 to start a building fund. That small act of generosity sparked the beginning of a dream.

The San Antonio Worship Group initially belonged to the Austin Monthly Meeting. It became a Preparative Meeting in 1976. They rented space at the YWCA for children’s activities. A First Day School was established. Fundraising began. A suitable building proved elusive. They initially purchased land on Sunset Road but it was deemed unsuitable. They found their current site in 1998.

Lake/Flato Architects designed the meetinghouse. Ted Flato carefully studied the design of other Quaker meetinghouses. He incorporated elements of simplicity and functionality. The design includes a meeting room library children’s rooms a kitchen and outdoor spaces. The building showcases sustainable and simple materials. The rock garden and pergola enhance the sense of peaceful simplicity.The building itself is a testament to the Quaker values of simplicity peace and community.
