Have you ever wondered what it takes to build an airport? We are standing before San Antonio International Airport, a place that has seen a lot of growth and change since it first opened in 1941. The city of San Antonio purchased 1,200 acres of land north of the city limits and called it San Antonio Municipal Airport. San Antonio International Airport welcomed its first airline, Braniff Airlines, in 1943. It was a far cry from the modern international airport it is today. The airport began its transformation during World War II, when a section of it was used as a training base. But the airport later became a popular destination for passengers, too, as planes became larger, faster and more comfortable. The airport played a role in the HemisFair ’68 World’s Fair, as many visitors came to San Antonio via the airport. The airport has continued to grow and adapt, with new terminals, parking garages, and airlines coming and going over the decades. It is a place where people from all over the world pass through every day, with a modern terminal and a bustling concourse, a reminder that San Antonio is a growing city with a rich history.
