Dreaming of Tukuwompa, the indigenous name for this land? Today we explore Samsonvale. It’s a rural locality within the City of Moreton Bay. Samsonvale offers a glimpse into Queensland’s past.

Samsonvale’s story is etched in resilience. It began with the Samsonvale pastoral run. The Joyner family established it in 1845. From this run, the locality derives its name.

The history of Samsonvale isn’t without hardship. The Joyner family experienced forced resumptions. Three-quarters of their land was taken in the 1860s.

Let’s rewind to education in early Samsonvale. Samsonvale Provisional School opened in 1875. However it closed in 1880. The school stood near the Presbyterian Church.

Imagine the community gathering in a slab hut for church services. In 1884, they built a church from local timber. Reverend A. Macintosh officially opened it in 1885. The Gold family donated the land. It was located at the end of Gold Scrub Lane. The church saw renovations in 1913.

Sadly, the North Pine Dam impacted the community. The dam caused many church members to leave from 1957. The church closed in 1969. The Dam Construction Authority purchased then demolished it in 1973. A memorial marks the church site today.

Consider the importance of the Dayboro railway line. The Samford railway station opened in 1918. It connected Samsonvale to the wider region. The line reached Dayboro in 1920. Unfortunately, the line closed from Ferny Grove to Dayboro in 1955.

Samsonvale was once a dairy farming hub. It centered around the Dayboro railway line. The North Pine Dam’s construction from 1968 to 1974 changed everything. It meant resuming 105 family homes. Lake Samsonvale’s creation led to the closure of the Presbyterian Church. The community hall and post office also closed.

Today, the cemetery is what remains of the old village. Much of the former district lies underwater. The original Samsonvale pastoral run also remains. The Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade facility sits above the old Kobble Creek community.

During a drought in 2006, Lake Samsonvale’s water levels dropped. Archaeological works were considered. The aim was to preserve artifacts from flooded homesteads. In 2010, the lake refilled. It covered historical sites and farmland.

Samsonvale is home to diverse wildlife. The area around the cemetery boasts over 250 bird species. Take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty.

Samsonvale’s story is one of change and adaptation. It reminds us of the impact of progress on communities. As we leave, remember the families and the history beneath the water.
