Lost in the heart of Gangnam District is Samseong-dong. It is more than just a neighborhood. It’s a vibrant tapestry of culture, commerce, and history.

Samseong-dong is an affluent area. It stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Cheongdam-dong and Apgujeong-dong. Upscale shopping malls line the streets. Popular restaurants buzz with activity. Luxurious hotels offer a haven for travelers.

But there is more to Samseong-dong than meets the eye. The COEX Mall is one of the world’s largest underground shopping centers. It sprawls beneath the surface. It offers a seemingly endless array of shops and entertainment.

Interestingly, the name Samseong-dong has nothing to do with the Samsung Group. The similarity is just a coincidence.

Let’s step back in time. March 1, 1914 marked the beginning of Samseong-ri. It was then part of Eonju-myeon, Gwangju-gun, Gyeonggi-do. Over the years, it underwent several transformations. It merged with Sudo-dong in 1963. It was renamed Cheongdam-dong in 1970. Finally, in 1977, Samseong-dong emerged as its own entity. It further divided into Samseong-1-dong and Samseong-2-dong in 1985.

Education thrives in Samseong-dong. Prestigious schools dot the landscape. Gyeonggi High School stands to the north of COEX. The surrounding area is known for its expensive houses and villas.

Samseong-dong offers many attractions. The World Trade Center Seoul stands tall. The COEX Convention & Exhibition Center hosts global events. For a cultural experience, visit the Kimchi Field Museum. Bongeun Temple offers a serene escape.

Speaking of Bongeunsa Temple, it provides a tranquil contrast. The temple was once the largest in Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty.

Ready for some underground exploration? The COEX Mall boasts over 260 shops. You can find a bookstore and over 100 restaurants. The COEX Aquarium is a must-see for families. The Starfield Library is another famous landmark. It offers a relaxing space amidst the shopping frenzy.

Consider visiting Samneung Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It provides a green oasis in the middle of Seoul.

Whether you’re a shopper, a history buff, or a seeker of tranquility, Samseong-dong has something to offer everyone.
