“Those ceremonial jewels floating in the bayou” A remarkable tale isn’t it? We stand before the Sampson Masonic Lodge No. 231 A. F. & A. M. plaque a testament to a rich history. This plaque commemorates Sampson Masonic Lodge No. 231 A. F. & A. M. a fraternal organization with deep roots in this community.
The Sampson Lodge No. 231’s journey began in 1859. Chartered by the Grand Lodge of Texas it was named for Brother Henry Sampson. Their first meeting place was a humble log cabin. Sadly this burned down in 1863. It was rebuilt only to be destroyed again by a devastating storm in 1875. Amazingly a set of ceremonial jewels gifted in 1859 survived. They were found miraculously attached to a doorknob floating in the bayou. These jewels 150 years old are still used by the lodge today. A symbol of resilience and endurance.
After the 1900 hurricane that ravaged Galveston the lodge moved inland. Temporary lodgings in a barn in Highlands near White Cemetery preceded a permanent building in Crosby. This two-story structure served the lodge for fifty years. In 1951 the brethren voted to build in Highlands. Lodge members and friends constructed the new building on Avenue D. Remarkably it was debt-free within a year thanks to their dedicated volunteer work.
Sampson Masonic Lodge No. 231 continues to thrive. It remains deeply involved in the community. They’ve laid cornerstones for Highlands Junior School and Goose Creek Memorial High School. They hold an annual meeting near their original site in Lynchburg. The lodge actively participates in local events like the Highlands Jamboree and Parade. They also support local families through fundraising efforts.
Their contributions extend beyond community events. They bestow a Community Builder Award to a non-mason and a Golden Trowel Award to a deserving mason. Their commitment to fellowship charity and community service is evident. The plaque before us is more than just a marker.
