Established in the warmth of Houston homes in 1938, Sampson Church, originally Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, started with a modest gathering of eight souls. The church saw a few pastors come and go before Reverend Harry B. Sampson, Sr. took the helm in 1943. Sampson Sr.’s leadership proved transformative for Sampson Church. He spearheaded the construction of a brick building around the original frame structure in 1947, a building now honored as the Memorial Building. He didn’t stop there. Recognizing the growing congregation, Sampson Sr. led the construction of a larger sanctuary in 1963, the same sanctuary we see today at Sampson Church. His vision extended beyond the church walls, leading to the acquisition of additional land, vital for the church’s future growth and community development. Modern amenities like air conditioning, a new organ and piano, and a public address system were also installed under his guidance. He secured the church’s affiliation with the Baptist Mission District Association, even serving as its first Moderator. After 28 years of dedicated service, Reverend Sampson Sr. passed away in 1971, leaving a legacy of growth and community at Sampson Church. His son, Reverend Franklin D. Sampson, became the fifth pastor of Sampson Church in 1972. Continuing his father’s legacy, he initiated further renovations and expansions, including a new educational and fellowship building. This building, dedicated in 2003, stands as a testament to the Sampson family’s commitment to Sampson Church and its community. The baton was then passed to yet another Sampson, Reverend Franklin D. Sampson, Jr., the current pastor. He upholds the family tradition of service and leadership, continuing to guide Sampson Church into a new era.
