Hidden amidst the towering skyscrapers of Seoul’s Gangnam District lies a tranquil oasis, Samneung Park. This isn’t just any park. It’s a royal resting place, a “Three Royal Tombs” park, cradling centuries of Joseon Dynasty history. Samneung Park Entrance, more than just a gateway, invites you to step back in time. It’s a portal to a serene world, a stark contrast to the urban hustle just beyond its gates. Samneung Park houses the Seolleung and Jeongneung tombs. Seolleung is the shared tomb of King Seongjong, Joseon’s ninth king, and his third wife, Queen Jeonghyeon. King Seongjong, though ascending the throne at a young age, ushered in an era of peace and prosperity, his posthumous name reflecting his accomplishments. His tomb, like the queen’s, adheres to Confucian and geomantic principles, facing south towards water and mountains. A unique feature of the king’s tomb is the T-shaped wooden shrine, a symbol of royal stature. A red gate marks the start of a stone pathway leading to a protected stele. Samneung Park also houses Jeongneung, the tomb of King Jungjong, King Seongjong’s son. King Jungjong, the eleventh Joseon monarch, ruled for 38 years, a reign marked by political reform. Originally buried elsewhere, he was moved to this more “propitious” site in Samneung Park by his third consort, Queen Munjeong. Ironically, the area was known for flooding. Samneung Park isn’t just a historical site. It’s a living, breathing space cherished by locals. Walking trails weave through dense woods of pine, willow, oak, and jujube trees. The air hums with the peaceful chorus of birds and cicadas. Tucked away within the park, you might stumble upon Jaesil, a traditional house used by priests to prepare rituals for the deceased kings. Even today, the Jeonju Lee clan, descendants of the Joseon Dynasty, continue these rituals. In 2009, UNESCO recognized Samneung Park among 40 other royal tombs, lauding their preservation. As you leave Samneung Park through the same entrance, you carry not just memories of ancient monarchs but a deeper appreciation for Korean history and culture.
