Saméon wasn’t always a small village. It once boasted a significant seigneury before the French Revolution. In 1624 Julien Rousseau a prominent figure in Mons became the lord of Saméon. He even received letters of ennoblement in Madrid a testament to the area’s complex history under Spanish rule. Rousseau served as a deputy for the cities in the Hainaut Estates Assembly. He was also the general receiver for the clergy of the province. A man of power and influence. His legacy still resonates in Saméon.

The little hamlet of Frèchies within Saméon also played its part. Ownership of Frèchies conferred a noble title. Jean Gabriel Jacquerye a jurist and échevin of Lille held this title around 1716. His life offers a glimpse into the lives of the local nobility. His marriage to Marie Anne Jacqueline Lippens another prominent Lille family cemented their connection to Saméon’s history. These seemingly small details paint a picture of a vibrant past.

The Saint-Martin church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Saméon. It dates back to 1771. Inside you’ll find a remarkable 18th century altarpiece. This beautifully crafted piece with its painted wood gilding and glass is a protected historical object. A quiet reminder of the faith and artistry that shaped the community.
