Hidden amongst the hills of Bukhansan National Park stands Samcheon Temple a place steeped in history and legend. Its name meaning Three Thousand Temples hints at a vibrant past. Legend claims that the renowned monk Wonhyo-daesa founded Samcheon Temple in 661 AD. However few historical records survive to confirm this claim.

Samcheon Temple’s history is fragmented. The Goryeosa a historical text published in 1451 mentions Samcheon Temple monks being punished for illicit rice wine production during King Hyeonjong’s reign. Another text the Dongguk Yeoji Seungram and the Bukhanji compiled in 1481 describes a period of prosperity where the temple housed an astonishing three thousand monks. This impressive number likely explains the temple’s name.

The Imjin War 1592-1598 left its mark. Samcheon Temple served as a base for the Righteous Army. Sadly it suffered partial destruction from fire. By the 18th century the temple was largely abandoned. A significant revival began in 1960 thanks to the efforts of monk Seongun. Further expansion followed in 1978. Then in 1988 a momentous event took place. Samcheon Temple received three sari crystallized remains of the Historical Buddha Seokgamoni-bul from Myanmar. These precious relics found their home in a magnificent nine-story pagoda which stands proudly at the temple’s entrance.

The pagoda is a sight to behold. Its base is adorned with guardian reliefs. Each level showcases various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Atop the pagoda sits a replica of the golden Lion Capital of Ashoka. The temple’s architectural treasures don’t stop here.

Beyond the pagoda lies Iljumun Gate its doors decorated with captivating paintings of Narayeon Geumgang and Miljeok Geumgang. Stone sculptures flank the entrance stairs featuring fierce dragons and images of the Dharmachakra. The temple’s upper courtyard houses a true treasure Korean Treasure #657. This is the Rock-Carved Standing Buddha a stunning granite carving presumed to date back to the early Goryeo Dynasty. It stands as a testament to the temple’s enduring history.

Nearby is a remarkable two-story structure. The lower level is one of Korea’s most beautiful Nahan-jeon Halls filled with five hundred statues of the Buddha’s historical disciples. The upper level the Sanshin-gak Hall boasts murals depicting Taoist immortals and a whimsical Tiger Smoking a Pipe.

Explore the temple’s many halls. Each hall contains captivating artwork. Marvel at the golden altarpieces. Discover the murals depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life or the ox herding murals. Notice a modern cityscape cleverly integrated into one mural. It shows the temple’s ability to blend tradition with modernity. Samcheon Temple truly is a treasure trove. It seamlessly blends history art and faith into one unique experience. It remains a peaceful place to reconnect with inner peace. It deserves a place on every traveler’s list.
