“Royal Steps” is what Raj Ghat loosely translates to. Raj Ghat is a memorial complex in Delhi. It holds significance as a place of remembrance. Today we stand before the Samadhi Sthal Sri Chandra Singh Pradhan Bust. This bust joins a collection of memorials. They honor prominent Indian leaders.
Raj Ghat marks Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation spot. This took place on January 31 1948. A black marble platform stands here. An eternal flame burns at one end. This symbolizes Gandhi’s lasting impact.
Over time Raj Ghat expanded. It now includes memorials for other leaders. These leaders include Charan Singh and Indira Gandhi. Also included are Jawaharlal Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi. Chandra Shekhar and Atal Bihari Vajpayee are also remembered here.
Raj Ghat’s name refers to its location. It was a historic ghat in Shahjahanabad. This lies on the Yamuna River’s west bank. The word “royal” signifies the site’s importance. “Steps” alludes to the climb from the riverbank.
Alick Percy-Lancaster originally landscaped these memorials. He served as Superintendent of Horticultural Operations. He worked with the Government of India. In 2000 the government decided against separate memorials. Atal Bihari Vajpayee led this decision. The existing memorials already occupied much land in Delhi.
Each memorial carries a unique name. These names reflect the leader’s contributions. Shanti Van means Garden of Peace. Vijay Ghat means Victory Platform. Shakti Sthal means Place of Power. Veer Bhumi means Land of Brave. Ekta Sthal means Place of Unity. Karma Bhumi means Land of Duty. Uday Bhumi means Land of Dawn. Jannayak Sthal means Place of People’s Leader. Smriti Sthal means Place of Remembrance. Sadaiv Atal means Firm Forever.
Other memorials exist near Raj Ghat. These honor figures like Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi. Also honored are Jagjivan Ram and Shankar Dayal Sharma. Devi Lal and K.R. Narayanan are remembered too. These sites provide insight into India’s history. They also showcase its leaders’ legacies.
