Sam Po is not just any deity. Legend says she was the third sister of Tin Hau. Tin Hau is the Goddess of Heaven. Fishermen deeply respected Sam Po. They believed she helped them defeat pirates.
In 1845, the temple began as a humble natural cave. Local fishermen pooled their resources. In 1859 they built a temple. It was reconstructed in 1864. It became a sanctuary dedicated to Sam Po.
Notice the massive rock. The Sam Po Temple is built around it. This rock is more than just a foundation. It is a sacrificial stone. A shrine is carved directly into it.

According to local records, Sam Po originated from Huizhou. Huizhou is a city in Guangdong province. She is a deity revered by fishing families. She is also worshipped by boat people.
