Sam Houston Race Park opened its gates in 1994. It was the first Class 1 horse racing venue in Texas. This impressive facility cost approximately $90 million to build. It’s named for Sam Houston a significant figure in Texan history. The park’s founder Kirwin Drouet chose the name to honor Houston’s legacy. The track’s location on Sam Houston Tollway further cemented the connection.
More than just a racetrack Sam Houston Race Park quickly became a hub of activity. It hosts thrilling Thoroughbred and American Quarter Horse races. These events attract huge crowds. The park’s largest attendance was recorded on July 4 2008 a staggering 32177 people.
Sam Houston Race Park isn’t just about horse racing. The venue transforms during the off-season. It becomes a vibrant space for concerts festivals and other events. The ZiegenBock Music Festival for example brings thousands of country music fans each year. Famous performers such as Willie Nelson and Lynyrd Skynyrd have graced its stage. Even more quirky events take place. There are annual Wiener Dog Races a lighthearted family-friendly spectacle. The park also hosts a food truck festival and a car show benefiting Houston US Vets. And then there’s the uniquely Texan Camel and Ostrich races.
Beyond its entertainment offerings Sam Houston Race Park showed its compassionate side. In 2017 after Hurricane Harvey it opened its doors to over 200 displaced horses. Providing refuge to these animals was a testament to the park’s community spirit. Unfortunately in 2023 the park faced a setback. Wagering declined sharply. This was due to restrictions on exporting their signal to other states. This highlights the challenges faced by the racing industry.
