Salvation Army Church

On a crisp Harare morning in 1891, a lone ox-drawn wagon rumbled into Fort Salisbury, completing a long journey from Kimberley, South Africa. This marked the humble beginnings of the Salvation Army Church in Zimbabwe. The Salvation Army Church in Zimbabwe has become a beacon of hope and spiritual guidance for countless individuals. The church’s presence in Zimbabwe dates back to that pioneering party led by Major and Mrs. Pascoe. They embarked on their mission to spread the word and establish a foothold in this new land. Rhodesia, as Zimbabwe was then known, officially became a separate territory for the Salvation Army in 1931. The Salvation Army Church established its territorial headquarters in Harare. The Salvation Army Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s deeply woven into the fabric of Zimbabwean society through its extensive philanthropic work and educational initiatives. The church has played a crucial role in providing education. They established institutions like Howard Institute, Bradley Institute, Usher Institute, and Mazowe High School. These schools have shaped the minds of generations of Zimbabweans. Tragedy struck the Usher Institute in 1978 during the Second Chimurenga. Guerrillas raided the school, resulting in the death of two British missionary teachers and the wounding of two others. This horrific event led to the Salvation Army’s withdrawal from the World Council of Churches. Despite this setback, the Salvation Army’s commitment to Zimbabwe remained unwavering. Their dedication to serving the community is exemplified by the establishment of an orphanage in Harare’s Mabelreign area in 2014. In addition to the orphanage, the Salvation Army operates several other philanthropic institutions. These institutions include Bumhudzo Home for the Elderly, Athol Evans Home for the Elderly, and the Braeside Social Complex. The Salvation Army also manages the Howard Hospital near Mazowe, providing crucial healthcare services to over 250,000 people in the surrounding rural communities. The Salvation Army Church continues to be a vital force in Zimbabwe, offering spiritual guidance, education, and social support to the people. Its story, one of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering dedication, is etched into the very heart of Harare.
