The plaque itself commemorates the years 1929-1931 and 1940-1973 when Madariaga made this house his home. It wasn’t just a residence though. It was a hub of intellectual activity a place where he penned influential works. He wrote prolifically producing books on history biography literature politics novels poetry and plays. His work on Don Quixote stands out a testament to his scholarly prowess.

Madariaga wasn’t merely a writer or diplomat. He was a man of action. He cofounded the College of Europe in Bruges. He received honorary doctorates and accolades from numerous countries. Even after Franco’s death he finally gave his delayed inaugural address to the Royal Spanish Academy. He was a truly international figure his legacy extending far beyond the walls of this house.

The plaque’s unveiling in 2011 was a significant event. His daughter Professor Isabel de Madariaga unveiled it. Dignitaries from the Spanish Embassy and Liberal International attended. It was a fitting tribute to a remarkable life a life that continues to inspire. So take a moment to absorb the significance of this seemingly small blue plaque. It tells the story of a giant.
