Hidden beneath the seemingly ordinary landscape of the Isle of Man’s northern plain lies a fascinating story. A story of perseverance and discovery. A story of the Salt Works at the Point of Ayre.

The Salt Works weren’t always here. Their existence is a direct result of a dedicated search for coal in the late 19th century. Geologists believed coal might exist under the northern plains mirroring similar coalfields in England. Several borings were undertaken by Messrs Craine of Liverpool. Their efforts surprisingly revealed something far more valuable than coal. They unearthed a significant deposit of rock salt. This unexpected discovery transformed the Isle of Man’s industrial landscape forever.

Imagine the excitement as the drilling rigs reached the Triassic marls. At the Point of Ayre borehole number five the salt was found at a depth of nearly 700 feet below the surface. The discovery wasn’t just a layer of salt. It was a substantial deposit with a total thickness of around 100 feet. This wasn’t just a geological curiosity. It was the raw material for a new industry.

The Manx Salt and Alkali Company was subsequently established. They pumped brine from the Point of Ayre. This brine was then piped all the way to Ramsey for processing. The resulting salt found a ready market. It was primarily used for preserving fish a vital industry in the region.

The Salt Works at the Point of Ayre represent more than just a salt mine. They symbolize the spirit of exploration and the unexpected rewards of perseverance. They highlight the Isle of Man’s surprisingly rich geological history. More than that the Salt Works mark the birth of a new industry. An industry that brought jobs and prosperity to the island. It all started with a search for coal. But the Earth had other plans. The story of the Salt Works is a testament to nature’s surprises. It is a story of discovery and ingenuity. It’s a story that continues to be written. A story worth remembering as we stand here at the very heart of this remarkable industrial heritage.
