Imagine a question echoing through the streets: Why drive past the homeless in Salt Lake to serve in Ogden? That question sparked a movement. It led to the founding of the Salt Lake Rescue Mission.

The Salt Lake Rescue Mission began in 1972. A small group of Christian businessmen regularly drove to Ogden to serve at the Ogden Rescue Mission. One day, Kay Nakashima asked why they bypassed Salt Lake’s homeless. This question inspired the men and their families. They established the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake.

Initially, the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake addressed immediate needs. They offered food, shelter, and clothing. Over time, services expanded. Comprehensive programs now offer addiction recovery and Christian education. They provide employment assistance, housing, and relationship restoration. In 1984, the Women’s Center opened. It provides a safe place for women and children. They find shelter, counseling, and addiction recovery here.

In 2019, the Salt Lake Rescue Mission and Ogden Rescue Mission merged. They became one organization. Together, they serve Utah’s vulnerable populations along the Wasatch Front. Today, the Salt Lake Rescue Mission serves over 700 daily meals. These meals go to the homeless and low-income in Ogden and Salt Lake. Each night, the mission provides shelter for 300 individuals. These men, women, and children have nowhere else to go.

The Salt Lake Rescue Mission is a faith-based nonprofit. Its mission is to end homelessness and restore lives. They help the homeless find faith. They encourage them to serve God. The mission strives to change lives. It helps people achieve sobriety, employment, and stable housing.

The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake faced external changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. They adapted methods to ensure physical distancing. They added plexiglass between bunks. The Salt Lake Rescue Mission continued to provide shelter, hygiene, and meal services. They also maintained their recovery program. Seek and Rescue outreaches were added. These outreaches provided supplies to homeless encampments. The Salt Lake Rescue Mission partnered with health departments for COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.

One staff member exemplified dedication. She packed an emergency bag. She was ready to live in her office. She wanted to provide continuous care to the homeless. She said it was her ministry. The Salt Lake Rescue Mission is more than just a shelter. It’s a beacon of hope. It demonstrates love and unwavering support. It offers pathways off the streets. It restores lives.
