From atop its 200-foot steel frame, the Salt Lake City Junction Microwave Tower has been silently observing the city’s evolution since 1951. This isn’t just any tower. It was a pivotal piece of the longest microwave relay system in the world at the time of its construction. The Salt Lake City Junction Microwave Tower, as it’s formally known, played a crucial role in connecting the coasts of America, bridging the gap between New York and Los Angeles. Imagine the excitement in 1951 when, thanks to this tower and its counterparts, people on opposite sides of the country could watch each other’s television broadcasts for the first time. This marvel of engineering cost $40 million, a staggering amount in those days, and involved 107 towers like this one, strategically positioned approximately 30 miles apart. Each tower amplified the signal a remarkable 10 million times before sending it on its journey. The Salt Lake City Junction Microwave Tower offered a unique engineering challenge. The vast, flat expanse of the Great Salt Lake posed a significant threat of signal interference through reflections. Engineers cleverly designed the microwave path to form a giant “W” shape around the lake. This “W”, spanning an impressive 122 miles, included the Salt Lake City Junction Microwave Tower and several ground-level stations, ingeniously circumventing the reflective salt flats. The Salt Lake City Junction Microwave Tower even survived a harrowing incident in 1961. The nearby Cedar Mountain and Wendover stations were tragically destroyed by explosions, an act of sabotage. Despite the chaos, temporary setups were swiftly erected, and the Salt Lake City Junction Tower continued its vital role in maintaining communications. This resilience underscores the tower’s significance, not just as a technological marvel but as a symbol of connection and continuity in a rapidly changing world.
