Did you know Salsette Island was once home to sixty-six villages? This sprawling island north of Mumbai’s original seven islets holds a captivating history. Salsette Island’s story begins long before the British arrived. Evidence suggests inhabitation dating back to the Stone Age. Deep-sea fishermen the Kolis and Agari salt makers were among the earliest inhabitants. Hindu Buddhist and Christian cultures flourished side-by-side.

The island’s rich past is further evidenced by the 109 Buddhist caves. These caves date from the end of the second century BC. The Kanheri caves are among the most famous. The Silhara Dynasty later ruled Salsette Island. Raja Bhim Dev the last known Hindu king had his capital in Mahikavati. Later the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese controlled the area. The Portuguese even gave the Jesuit priests sole ownership of Bandra Parel Wadala and Sion. They built several churches in Bandra including the famous St Andrews Church.

The British acquired Salsette Island in 1774. They connected it to Bombay Island. This massive undertaking involved colossal engineering works. The reclamation and joining of the islands created the Mumbai we know today. The British transformed Salsette Island. They reclaimed land built infrastructure and established a thriving port.
