Amidst the vibrant energy of Lille, the Salle des fêtes de Fives stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural dynamism. The Salle des fêtes de Fives isn’t just a building. It’s a time capsule, whispering stories of celebrations, political gatherings, and artistic expressions that have echoed within its walls since 1928. Originally designed to accommodate 1,112 people under its soaring balcony, the Salle des fêtes de Fives has witnessed countless gatherings. It first opened its doors after the city of Lille acquired the Barrois family estate, a property boasting a charming chateau and sprawling park. The city council, recognizing the need for a festive space in Fives, commissioned architect Marcel Cools to bring this vision to life within the estate’s grounds. Cools, known for his eclectic style with a touch of Art Deco influence, left his mark on the Salle des fêtes de Fives. The grand motif of a setting sun, crafted from enamelled ceramic tiles, graces the facade facing the street, a beacon of warmth and artistic flair. The side facing the Square des Mères, a nod to neoclassicism, showcases six rhythmic pilasters framing elegant windows. Its centerpiece features three large ogival stained-glass windows, crowned by oblong oculi. Inside, the Salle des fêtes de Fives was originally adorned with intricate staff vegetal motifs. After a period of closure in 1997 due to safety concerns, the Salle des fêtes de Fives underwent a magnificent restoration between 2002 and 2003. This revitalization, part of Lille’s preparations for its role as the European Capital of Culture in 2004, breathed new life into the venue. Today, managed by the city’s cultural department, the Salle des fêtes de Fives continues to host a vibrant array of events. From lively balls to captivating theatrical performances, music festivals, dance exhibitions, and more, the Salle des fêtes de Fives remains a cultural hub. The renovated hall now welcomes up to 900 people on its parquet floor, while the balcony can accommodate an additional 240. The stage and three dressing rooms provide the perfect backdrop for artistic expression.
